Three products, three jobs
On OwnHost, shared hosting, a cloud server, and a dedicated server are not three names for the same rack. Shared hosting shares CPU and RAM with many sites. A cloud server isolates CPU and RAM in hardware. A dedicated server reserves the whole physical machine for one customer. A VPS is a fourth product between them. The detail is on the VPS page.
Which one you open depends on how the server is managed, before it depends on the visitor’s city. A control panel is enough: hosting. You want root and isolated resources: cloud. You want the machine itself: dedicated.
Where shared hosting stays
Linux hosting is written for a personal blog, a brochure site, and a new shop. It is managed with cPanel or Plesk. You do not build the server. When the site slows down, or daily visitors pass about 1,000, compare a cloud server. That line is also in the hosting and cloud article.
If you want the provider to handle WordPress updates and security, look at WordPress hosting before you move to cloud. A cloud server is not a plan that manages WordPress for you. Root is yours.
When a cloud server is enough
If the application runs on its own operating system, a panel is not enough, and a neighbor’s CPU should not affect you, a cloud server is the right product. The four plans run from $3.99 to $29.99 a month. MINI is 1 core and 2 GB of RAM, STANDARD is 2 cores and 4 GB, PRO is 4 cores and 6 GB, and ENTERPRISE is 4 cores and 8 GB of RAM. The disks are 40, 60, 80, and 120 GB NVMe. The CPU is Intel Xeon Platinum and GOLD.
The locations are Istanbul and Frankfurt. IPv4 and IPv6 come together. There is one free static IP. The VPS x4 to VPS x32 plans in the country cities do not carry these resources. Those plans start at $4.49 a month, do not include IPv6, and the CPU is chosen at order as Ryzen or Xeon Gold/Platinum. On cloud the CPU is fixed.
Read the product page to see whether backups, a panel license, and the SLA are included in the price. The cloud comparison page is there if you want a comparison table. The table does not replace the plan card.
Do not treat a VPS as cloud
A VPS has the lower entry price. VPS MICRO is $2.49 a month. It has 1 core, 1 GB of RAM, and a 20 GB SSD. Cloud MINI is $3.99, with 2 GB of RAM and 40 GB NVMe. Both are small servers. They do not go in the same cart.
Windows is a separate question. On Istanbul and Frankfurt VPS, Windows starts at VPS PRO, with 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM. The license is not included. The cloud server card does not list a Windows version. If you will install Windows, read the Windows VPS page first. Linux images are on the Linux VPS page.
When a dedicated server is the right machine
If the traffic, the media library, or the workload should not sit on a shared virtualization layer, look at a dedicated server. CPU, RAM, and disk are not shared with another hosting account. You choose the hardware. The provider racks the machine and assigns the IP addresses. There are not four ready cards, as on cloud. The resource is the physical server you order.
Dedicated is not a larger cloud plan. On cloud, resources follow the plan and CPU and RAM are isolated in hardware. On dedicated, the machine is that one customer’s. The order pages are separate too.
A short choice
- A panel is enough and root is not required: Linux hosting or WordPress hosting.
- Root, NVMe, and isolated CPU and RAM: a cloud server, from $3.99 a month.
- A lower entry price and the VPS model: VPS, from $2.49 a month. For the city, use the location article.
- The whole physical machine: a dedicated server.
Write down the management need first. Then write down the city. A cloud server in Istanbul and a VPS in Istanbul can share a building. They are not the same product. Order from the page of the product you chose.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions this article is most often asked.
1 Does a cloud server manage WordPress?
No. Managed WordPress work sits on the WordPress hosting plan. On a cloud server, root is yours.
2 Is a dedicated server a larger cloud plan?
No. A dedicated server is the whole physical machine. On a cloud server you pick one of four cards, and CPU and RAM are isolated in hardware.
3 Is an Istanbul cloud server the same product as an Istanbul VPS?
No. They can sit in the same city. Cloud starts at $3.99 a month and isolates resources in hardware. VPS starts at $2.49 a month and the virtualization is in software.
